I think I'm going to call the local Invisible Fence folks, see how much it would be to do the typical suburban backyard - I don't want old superpooch in the front yard unless I can keep an eye on him. Plus he'd probably scare the **** out of the neighbors anyhow...

One thing.... ALWAYS make sure the battery is at full power or new in the collar.... I have made that mistake!

I have over five acres and it's just too much to fence- electrically or otherwise. I have always trained my dogs with a professional shock collar- same one used by the top hunting and guard dog trainers- it cost me a couple hundred bucks 15 years ago.
If the dog has it in his/her mind to chase something out here in the country, they will cross that boundary of 'invisible fence' way too quickly, and won't learn a thing. I started early, when they were pups; if they crossed the property line, they got a zap. My collar has plug-in 'modules' that are labeled for increasing intensity, and you just simply step up as the dog grows. It is also 100% waterproof for hunting training.
All of my dogs were completely perimeter trained by the age of 8 months using this method- they wouldn't dream of crossing the line, unless I ordered them to follow me for some reason.

Mine worked for a couple of months before my Boxer knew exactly where her boundries were. she would literally sneak up on her stomach right to the edge before she would get shocked and then take a flying leap, I watched her do it several times, and once on the other side, don't ever expect them to come back home. It depends on how stubborn your dog is, mine is as stubborn and as thick headed as they come and she refused to obey it no matter how hight I turned up the juice. IMO works well depending on the dog..
