BJ,
Depends mostly on 2 things - Layup and then paint and options. I do not see the necessity to use Carbon and Kevlar layups, but most of our customers demand it and the price goes way up. We haven't built a simple boat with a 500 in some time, but my guess is we could do one for $85,000 or so and it would run over 85mph. The standard layup with 600 hp will run 105+... and we all know how they handle the rough stuff.

Hey Fred !
What a great idea and I happen to have a 2001, like new, that I'm ready to deal on for Christmas !!
They are built like tanks and ride great in rough water as well as flat...their reputation is terrific.
Lots of great boats mentioned here, this is just another alternative at a give-away price.

I have to say the 28 Bat Boat is bad azz I was trying to run with the one Ittlifi posted picture of at cumberland last spring and it flew so straight it amased me. There was no way my Baja could hang with it. But neither could a 35 Fountain running in some prety sloppy water!

I know making a statement about Activators being a great rough water boat would stir things up. And all things aside, there are many great boats discussed in this thread. The 7' beam boats have it all over the wide bodies when it comes to sloppy water. I would not take anything away from Pantera as being a well built boat. It was on my A-list when searching for my next ride, along with Corsa, Martini, Superboat, Magnum and Excalibur. Then this Activator pops up out of nowhere. Couldn't be happier.
Just Once, For the record, do you realize the statements made by BJM are fully justified and accurate. He has the credentials to prove it. I don't think you realize that he is a former "2 Time APBA National Champion" in Factory One. His boat of choice? ACTIVATOR!!!!!!!!!
Did I forget to mention that Activator won the National and World Championship Titles this year in Factory One?
And for you BH/Joker, I checked out your boat in Orange Beach. I like them there Joker Boats. Nice!!!!
Bottom line is that there are choices to be made and there are many contenders to suit all of us boaters.

The 27 must be great-I ran a
22' for 7 years-the best handling 22' boat that I have been in-the best part of it it was very predictable-I have a Velocity now and its alot harder to drive-not any faster

Just to blabber a bit more ...
From what I've read from this thread's originator, he's looking for a family performance boat to waterski, trailer, mainly lakes, occasionally the Chesapeake Bay. I certainly feel that a Sonic is the best all around boat. Solid enough to handle the bigger water, tons of cabin room for the family, well built, good resale. The Progression, Activator, Pantera, Bat Boat are all excellent solid boats, but lets be reasonable - for a "family boat" are you going to take a Bat Boat to the local hang out and have the girls lay out on each wing and put the kids up on the bow. I'll acknowledge that I haven't been on a Pantera with the lowered cockpit floor, but there is still no way the cabin room is even close to the Sonics'. I had to just about bend in half to get in there on the Pantera - its built for speed, not microwaving your food and watching the plasma screen (which the Sonic is).
I guess one of the reasons I keep writing so much is because I've been debating doing something in this size range for the past year. I have a 259 Checkmate with a HP 500 that was one of the fastest single engine boats around Upstate NY lakes. Bringing it out on the Long Island Sound, it is way out of its league. I'm 28 years old, and certainly want something well built and fast, but 99% of the time, I'd rather have space for the girls, their extra clothes, makeup, shoes, blaa, blaa, etc. so I don't have to listen to them complain. I really don't think an Activator, Progression, Pantera, etc. are the right boat for bringing out a bunch of passengers for me or for someone's family(although they probably are the toughest and fastest boats built). It's a trade off, but you just don't need a race boat to take the family out for the day. One day when I'm rich I'll have a Pantera to blast around in and a 50'+ Buddy Davis Sportfish to take the friends and family out in.
