A Product of the Times
I have read just about everything there is to read about Aronow just as a lot of other people have and while I don't agree with the way people did things back then, they were products of the times and enviroment.
Aronow retired the first time in his early 30s. Being in the same business he was in back then, I would say that in his day there was more opportunity and less competition than there is today.
As for his history and contributions to the boating industry, there is no question that he brought A LOT to the table over the years and for that he deserves the accolades he has recieved for so long.
With regards to his reputation in business and as a womanizer; the way he did business was not the way I operate hence I would have stayed away from him. As for him screwing other peoples wives, it does take two and you never know what entices people to do those things, but it happens.
Speed Kills is supposed to be the more accurate of the two (besides Blue Thunder). I have read both many times and while Blue Thunder is the more "exciting" read, Speed Kills makes more sense and seems to flow better with the way things were back then in South Florida. I lived in Hollywood in the late '70s and '80s and I was quite aware of what was going on. I can actually say that I used to buy my pot from Ben at the bandshell on the Hollywood beach.
If I had to guess, I would say that the conclusions in Speed Kills make more sense; he was popped because he screwed the wrong guy- simple.

I can't help but comment here. Somebody said that Reggie started building in 1979 and we would still have these boats. I may be wrong but didn't Reggie buy a set of molds at first. If Don was not around Reggie would still be playing in the lakes.

Had lunch with the man when I was dating Missy's roommate. He's definitely a man's man no bull sheet type of guy. If you were from the offshore powerboat world he was bigger than life.
Never forget in the early '80s when he came by the Jockey Club pool in his Bell hovering 150' above the ground one afternoon so he can waive at Missy while she was sun bathing. You can tell he was really in love with her. Can't blame him she was a drop dead knock out.

I spent thousands of hours with him. Tough, smart, handsome, big, rich, competitive, fearless, mildly crooked (for fun). I would as soon spend a day with him as anyone I knew.....
