Maybe you guys got better xray vision than me, but I can't tell from the pix provided whether the passenger compartment of that H2 was seriously compromised.
The H2, like the Tahoe/Burb platform it is based upon, is designed to crumple. The engine is designed to shed its front-mounted accessories and absorb a good chunk of material from the collapsing radiator/evaporator shell. The engine/trans is designed to crumple back towards AND UNDER the passenger compartment, with the passenger compartment sliding up and over the engine.
I honestly can't tell whether the driver and passenger of the H2 should have legs anymore or not.
Any way you look at it, though, it was a whale of a lick.
I was involved in a multi car crash where I went "under" an airborne car coming from the oncoming direction. The airborne car was still estimated at going over 40 when it hit the car behind me as a 90% square head on with a Taurus that was travelling the same direction as I at around 60. The passenger in the Taurus had crushed legs, but they healed and she walks fine now. The driver's legs were fine. Both of them survived which is a total shock to me. The crush and crumple performance of that 1997 Taurus worked perfectly. Engine/transaxle moved rearward and downward just like it was supposed to. Looked a lot like that H2 picture.
Similarly, the drunk girl in the flying Riviera suffered only minor injuries.

Regarding the first picture of the H2 and the Dodge Ram
I read the news paper article on that accident. The H2 driver caused the accident by running a red light. He himself hit four cars while causing this accident that included a total of 6 cars.
I drive a Ram myself and am no fan of the H2 but I wouldn't read too much into toughness of either truck based on that picture.
