The guy in the article says that the "engines stalled and the waves began crashing onto the boat."
There's no mention of drives ripping off.
Got freeboard?

It doesn't take much of a wave to sink a boat really fast if their coming over the back, of course out there the waves may be 3-4' but their 50' apart so something else must have happened first.

This shows they had some sense at least. All they are mourning is the loss of a boat, and not the loss of their friends.
All four passengers were wearing life jackets and none were injured, said Coast Guard Search and Rescue Specialist Sandy Needle.

The boat is from the stack.....I forget whose boat it was, but it was called Bad Boy....some bad ass Pfaff motors, but of course he said it only had HP500's, so the insurance is not covering anything. I heard it sank again in Newport after they towed it back. The tow guy pulled it back from Catalina, but got there early in the AM, fell asleep and it sank again when we has asleep. Now everyone from Newport is all over the situation with the CG, environmental agencies and stuff. A real mess.
