What's an 01 diesel excursion worth ?
A friend of mine just ordered his new 05 Ford excursion . he figured he would just trade his 2001 until they said $24k......... They haven't even seen it yet ,this was over the phone .. Wouldnt' this be worth closer to $30k ? IT is White, fully loaded ,leather, mint condition ,4x4, 50,000 miles (?) , etc...... has anyone traded their's or think this is crazy low price ?
For 24k I might be tempted to buy it myself !!

Not so crazy price for a 2001. Excursions do not hold value that well and actualy, $24k for a 2001 on trade is more than likely not ACV! With the hit Excursions take, I'm sure they are off-setting trade by bumping up the new one so they don't insult and run him off. I have a 2004 wiht just under 15k and I would expect to be offered $30k-$33k for it on trade. I'm sure if he took the 2001 out of the picture, the new one could drop $2-3k. Depending on how it's equipped, a new one should sell for $43-$44k easily. MSRP would be in the $51-$53k range.
If the 2001 is in great condition and you know the history and it's clean, $24k wouldn't be that bad. Just make sure your friend has the deal re-worked so he knows exactly what the tax hit would be, and they what they are actually selling the new one for. I bet they are showing $46-$48k on the new one if they are showing $24k for his 2001 on the deal right now.
Things could be different in your region and I could be wrong though.

Re: What's an 01 diesel excursion worth ?
These are "base" numbers from Kelley's Blue Book 1990-2004:
2001 Excursion 4WD XLT retailed new approximately around $38,925.
Used RETAIL (from a car lot) in excellent condition lists around $19,850.
Trade-in "base" value in great shape is listed at $13,300.
Average Private party sale "base" price in great shape is $15,950.
**Add or subtract the below numbers to the "base" prices above:
For example using the base retail number above of $19,850:
-Subtract $665 if equipped with the 5.4L engine ($19,185)
-ADD $6,265 if equipped with the 7.3L turbo diesel ($26,115).
-Subtract $1,865 if only a 2WD ($17,985).
-Subtract $1,235 if it came with no 3rd seat ($18,615).
-Acceptable max mileage range for a 2001 should be between 55-60,000 miles.
Kelley's Blue Book doesn't list optional items ike leather seats etc., but it gives you the ball-park range based on statistical sales data gathered annually. Prices will vary in different regions of the country.
Hope this lends perspective. You know the dealer is hiding the extra cost of the vehicle he's selling ion the trade in. Major rule of thumb in buying a new vehicle is, negotiate each item separately to get the TRUE value of the deal. You'd be surprised how little he's actually getting off the 2001. They take off the asking price and add it on the trade-in offer to hide the margin and give the buyer the "feel good" affect. All that said, 24k for one with the turbo diesel is a good price for a reasonably low mileage vehicle.

According to the NADA website, Avg. Trade-in is $23,500 and avg. retail is $26,875.
That's for the XLT turbo diesel 4wd.

But again, you'd need to see exactly what they are acually offering for his and what they are actually selling theirs for. 99% of the time numbers on a deal like that are fluffy all over.
EDIT
Just did a search in your area and 200 miles out (8 hits) and dealers are listing Limited 4x4 7.3's for $27k to $33k. The highest is a 22k mile truck but most are in the 40-50k mile range and are listed for $27-$28k. Again, these are dealer $XX,995.95 type listed prices so I'd say $25-$28 is about right for an average true retail. $24k trade is fluffy stuffbut a god deal if he'd sell it to you. Better yet, if NJ has sales tax on vehicles, do a in/out deal where you buy it from the dealer at trade time and give them $24100 to cover admin costs and they never touch the trade, your friend gets the tax advantage and you get a good deal in a good truck.
This is good theropy to keep me realistic about mine.

Re: What's an 01 diesel excursion worth ?
My wife has an 01 Excursion Limited 4 X 4 V-10 that she bought brand new, it is 100% perfect with all the options and only 33,000 miles.
She thought she wanted a car a few months back and all the dealers would offer her for the Excursion was $21,000.
The "X" is nice. She decided it was worth a lot more than that to her and is keeping it. It will be paid off next year which is nice also!
We upgraded the headlights so it looks like a new model and are cruising on!
A customer of mine liked ours a lot after riding in it and bought an 01 with a 7.3 diesel. It had 40,000 miles and he paid $26,000. This was just last summer.
Hope this helps.

Why not buy the grill and head lights off an 05, thats all thats different. except for the 6.0 and it's not that much better.
