Re: who works on their own boat?
I love to work on mine. Cleaning, oil changes and winterizing i do myself. I did the EMI Thunder manifolds and risers on the Fountain last year myself. Anything internal on the engines i let someone else do. I like getting out on the pier and working on it. I leave the phone in the house and its relaxing for me. My Cheasapeake Bay Retriever loves being down on the pier with me.

I'm with old and tired......I'm a auto technician for the past 25 years and one of my sayings are Do it right ....or just don't do it. We have a few of the trade school kids in our shop and they act as if they know everything and it scares the crap out of me to think that they just spent a boatload of their parents money and are basically clueless when it comes to.....the basics. I won't even let the detailers clean my cars.....When you want it done right you gotta do it yourself.

Only time someone else worked on my boats is for gel repair or the machine work only on the motors. Other than that, no one. I don't need them leaving me with broken, scratched, greasy, torn, or whatever stuff in order to do thier work. No one cares about the condition of our boats more than us, so I don't risk it.
I find I can do most of the stuff myself armed with the correct info, which I get from here from the pros. Plus it is the other 1/2 of enjoyment I get from being a boat owner.

I do as much as I can. Getting to know your boat might help someday when something breaks. I've been able to salvage a weekend by fixing something very minor. I'm no mechanic by any means but maybe thats why I enjoy it.

I know better than to break into tranies other than that bring it on. I don't even like other people in my motors. If there are problems I have to find out what they did so I can fix it. Better to just do it myslf to start with. Plus most shops will kill you on labor for stuff you can do yourself. More money to spend on the better parts that way.
