Calling all gear heads! 496 stroker build up.
I am planning on converting my 454 to a 496 but need help choosing a cam. I will be using an all 4340 rotating assembly that will yield 10.25 compression. Other parts I already have and plan on using are: 850 Holley carb, Edelbrock air gap rect port intake, large rect port steel heads and Comp Cams pro magnum roller rockers and lifters. My exhaust consists of Lightning Offshore (dry) system. I am seeking any input to parts listed above and especially cam selection. I would like to extract the most torque and HP from this set up while still keeping it user friendly. I do not plan on spinning it over 5500rpm. I would also like to take advantage of my dry exhaust on cam selection. I am not biased to any cam manufacturer so any and all suggestions are appreciated. Please give specific duration, lift and lobe separation if possible. Thanks for any and all of your help!!

TC, if you are really looking to maximize the performance of your 496, then drop the compression to 8.0 and get yourself an 6-71 or 8-71 blower setup. The blower will extract far more performance from that motor while remaining user friendly than any NA setup. With a blower, you can still use a mild cam and keep a decent idle. If you need still more, then its still there for the taking with a bigger cam. One guy from our club up here was making ~900hp with his. I believe he was using an 8-71 on his 496 in a 26' Scarab. Very fast boat!!
I realize you were looking for advice for a NA engine, but if you have the bucks, go with the blower. I did and don't think I'll ever go back. CD

I second the motion on Rmbuilder.
Yes, I know, another shameless plug for our own Bob Madara. The guy knows his stuff about performance valvetrains with an emphasis on Marine Performance Component selection.
I have spent time with the "Scholar of Cams" or should I say "The Duke of Duration"!
I am sure he will chime in here before this thread dies out.

TC,
Are the heads 990 castings, stock or worked? Have they been flowed? Rod length?
Rob,
Video is great! Are they in the boat now?
Russ,
Time to get the Activator wet!!

Not sure of casing number but they are stock Gen V. Have not been flowed but they were freshened last season. Rod length will be 6.385"
