A friend of mine is having an issue with his Baja Boss 245. He has the 496Mag with the Smartcraft system. While underway, the buzzer will go off. It is a steady beep that last for several seconds (sometimes close to a minutes). All of the gauges read normal and drive lube bottle is full. Also sometimes when at idle it will give 2 short beeps and then do it again a few minutes later. Anyone have any idea? He has taken it back to his dealer and they say there is no information in the computer about why it's been going off. He just bought the monitoring gauge for it, but they sent the wrong cable for it, so it hasn't helped him out yet.
Thanks for the help

Should be an easy diagnosis if dealer has the proper equipment and has someone who knows how to use it. Did they give you a printout of the diagnostic information that you could post?
Sounds like it may be an exhaust manifold getting too hot (over 212 degrees). If you have access to an infrared thermometer, check the manifold/riser temps when the alarm is sounding.
But thats just a guess, can't really make a diagnosis based on the information that you have given. Maybe you can post more info when the smartcraft monitor is hooked up.

There are way to many things that can cause what you are talking about, to make a guess. If someone has a scan tool, that would be the best way to identify the problem. It is not a bad idea to invest in a scan tool, if you have a smart craft engine. About $500. Saves allot of headaches, and money in the long run. Would also recommend getting a PCM 555 service manual from Mercury. In short, the constant warning is a hard fault, usually with the throttles advanced. Depending on the severity of the fault, it may reduce the power available. The 2 beep/min. could be the same fault with the throttles at idle. In the last 2 years I have had, water pump press, Map sensor, and an IAC motor, cause the warning you are referring to. The possibilities go beyond that. I have heard people having, cam, and crank sensor issues, as well. Whatever you find let us know. Good luck.

Getting your own scanner isn't a bad idea but at the very least I would recommend finding a new shop .If they couldn't diagnose the problem they ovbiously didn't have the scanner themselves or the knowlegde to operate it. The best thing to do is go to the Merc website and use the dealer locater and find a platnum rated dealer. they have to have all the current tools and training to mantain that status and are ussualy some of the higher class shops,.
