Alpha leaking oil
There is drive oil leaking out of the Alpha I Gen II drive on my father-in-law's runabout. It looks like it is coming out where the upper and lower meet.
Does anyone know if there is a seal between the upper and lower that could cause a leak here? I figure I will replace the impeller while I have the drive split.

There is a small square cross section o ring that lives ina counterbore between the upper and lower halves. Fix it right away because if oil can get out, water can get in and that will trash the drive ina hurry. Easy to separate the halves if you are mechanically inclined.

is that something that normally gets replaced when you change the impeller (does it come in the kit) or would I have to buy it separately? thanks again

Hum, been a long time since I changed impeller on an alpha......I think it came with the outdrive gasket kit (to the gimbel). Look at mercruiserparts.com and they will list comes with each kit.

Yes, the seal is included with the gasket set. And yes it could leak if damaged.
Where on the drive does it leak?
On my Gen 1 Alpha the oil passage is on the right side of the drive. About the mid point front to back.
If the leak is in the front area, then like Biggus said, it could be shift shaft seal.
Either way the drive has to come apart to be fixed.

it looks like it is coming out right above the forward right nut that holds lower to the upper. I was looking at my manual and that looks like where the oil passage is on the Gen II's as well.

That is the area of the Quad seal, and the shift shaft seal. split the drive and replace both of em, the quad seal is like 2 bucks and the shift shaft seal/bushing is like 20 bucks. your best off just to do both and be done with it. Also the quad seal on alphas can easily be damaged by filling the drive to fast so be carefull when you fill it, pump about half the speed you would with a bravo.

you need #7, that is the quad seal, and a #35, that is the shift shaft housing, add an A1 to the pn and it becomes the kit with the housing and all the seals it may be an A4 though. the parts list should list it at the above the # for for #35, and it will be the same # as #35 just with an A something after it.
