Need Advice: 3.3 Whipple or Quad Rotor for 557CI
I am adding Whipple Chargers to my Eliminator 30 daytona this year and am wondering which blower I should use.
My engines are 555 CI with full port Brodix BB2 XTRA heads, 9:1 compress., Mech Roller cams approx. .700 lift. and 264/270 dur @.050 This engine made 776 HP at 6800 rpm with a single dominator and Brodix intake on the dyno last season
I want to run on 92 octane fuel most of the the time but for Poker runs and special days I want to be able to make ten pounds boost and at least 1000HP and will run race fuel.
Can anyone tell me if the 3.3 litre might be enough capacity to accomplish what I want? I am also going to go with the big intercooler so it may help cool the smaller blower charge. I have the carb setup already for the single so I am leaning that way but if it is too small I would rather do it the right way now and go with a 2.3 liter Quad setup with twin dominators
Please send over your thoughts or experiences ASAP as I am about to order.
Thanks a lot.
Ted

Re: Need Advice: 3.3 Whipple or Quad Rotor for 557CI
Having been in your position a year ago, I would go with the quad rotor. The 3.3L will be very hard to make 1000HP, especially without EFI. Possible yes, but not easy. After quite a bit of thought, I went with the 2.3 quad rotor, and made over 1100Hp on 93 octane. A friend decided to go with the 3.3L and made 945HP on 93 octane.
You would be better off reducing your compression to 8:1, but it's not required if your goal is only 1000HP. As long as you go with the quad rotor.

BTW on race fuel my quad rotor made 1375HP and his 3.3L would only make 970HP, and that was under ideal conditions. The 3.3L can't supply enough air to keep the boost up without heating the air way up, no matter the innercooler.

I dont want to reduce my compresion as my long blocks are all new and built as 9:1. What kind of components and specs of cam did you make 1100 with?
If i go the 2.3 Quad do you think I can make a good ten to twelve pounds of boost?
Thanks for your info.
Anyone else seen some actual comparisons?

My cam is very similar to yours, .690 lift ~260 duration, solid lifters. I don't recall the exact specs. I'm also running AFR 357 heads, and Stellings dry exhaust on a 540Ci at 8:1 compression. I can make 16Ibs of boost on race fuel, so 10-12Ibs will be very easy for you. If you go with the larger MOAC innercooler it will be even easier, mine is the older one.

Thank you for the info. I was thinking exactly what you said, its on the edge and I dont like to make a major addition and find it is only just marginal with no extra boost when I might want it. The moac looks good, I am considering it still even with the 2.2 quad rotor as it is an inexpensive relaiability/performance option.

Re: Need Advice: 3.3 Whipple or Quad Rotor for 557CI
Does anyone have anything negative to say about the 2.3 litre quad rotor? I am ready to order and dont want to have something that is considered an odd combo or out of date.
It seems that if you are going this far, why not go to the 3.3 quad but as I get older and hopefully wiser I think why waste the money on the biggest if you dont need 1450HP.
I would be very happy to have 1200HP on race gas for the poker runs and 1000HP on tap all the time.
A few more comments would be greatly appreciated
