What Gary said is correct....Spend the $45 and rebuild yours and if you are not satisfied go new........

How did those carbs work out for you? I believe you bought them from me, yes? I agree on staying with the qjet, it really is a great carb and I wish I'd kept mine just to have.

Thanks guys , great feedback. So go with the rebuild you say! I may just end up doing that .

How about this barry grant 650? I have a 1979 260hp, will I have to change out the manifold to fit the BG carb? And will it run well with my stock engine?

Who sells Barry grant carbs? how easy are they to tune.

The main reason I think my carb needs rebiult is I can not get it to idle anymore. It will idle at 1100 but it seems to have a miss. some=times the thing will idle but most of the time it has a hard time. in "N" it idles pretty good, as soon as I put it into drive it stalls unless I goose it some.

Thanks again.

You really are going to spend a lot of money on a BG carb and a new intake. I hope you're not expecting to see any significant HP increases. Your limitations are your heads, cam, compression and if you have it your thru-prop exhaust. You are currently using a spreadbore and you will actually lose throttle response by going to a square bore. You have a 5.7 liter, What is your max RPM? I'm going out on a limb and say 5200. Those numbers require less than 530 CFM to operate at 100% Volumetric efficiency. And you are probably only running in the low 80s VE with that engine. And now you want to go with a 650 BG with a larger volume intake? This will further lower the VE making your engine feel sluggish. I'm not trying to offend anyone but I have been building HP EFI engines with the goal of getting high VE numbers. You can get a lot of HP out of a smaller engine this way (like 1239-HP out of 2933cc) The days of bolting on an aluminum intake and bigger carb are over. You will make it look nicer but it won't run any faster.

You'll need a new manifold. BG is squarebore, the Qjet and your current manifold are spreadbore. They make adapters, but I'm not a big fan of their use.
You'll also have to change the choke mechanism. ie wire for electric.
The BGs are much like holleys, fairly easy to tune. But the only reason for replacing the carb is if the throttle shafts are worn to the point of causing a vacuum leak, or salt has just eaten them up.

Compare it to an EFI system then you will start hearing the bad... Like:

I can't keep up!
If only I installed those larger jets.
I wish I had a choke lever.
Careful, don't move the throttle or you'll flood it.
Pump it a few times; it'll start.
Wheres the starting fluid?
I'm letting it cool off so I can start it again.
This thing sucks the gas.
Aww crap not another leak.
Is this thing heavy enough to anchor my boat?

Paragon,

I'd start with a compression test. If thats ok, then new plugs, wires/cap/rotor check timing, replace fuel/water separator, then get into carb.

Like Gary said...IF it's not leaking at throttle shaft then rebuild kit probably OK.
