Oil Pump Pickup length for 454 magnum
I m rebuilding my 1988 454 mercruiser magnums, they have what I believe to be the std. aluminum finned oil pans. I purchased new oil pumps. My old ones have the oil pickup tube welded to the housing so re-using them is not an option.
When ordering the pickup's what size does one specify? I have purchased most of the rebuild items from summit, they did not know how to size the pickups. I measured the depth of the pan from top top lip to base, however the gentleman at summit stated that was not the correct method for determining the pickup length. The pumps are melling's.
Thanks very much for any advice you can offer.

I just went down this road last month. Take our old pump to Nappa or Chevy dealer. They made two different lengths.
The only thing that looks different is the head with the screen is smaller. I ordered one from Summit and it was the EXACT same as the Nappa pickup.
Make sure you weld the pickup tube to the pump.
