alpha to OMC???
A Friend Has A Omc Cobra Out Drive I Can Get Cheap
I Figure Since I'm Going To Have Everything Riped Out
To Redo The Transom, this Maybe A Good Time To
Replace The Alpha
Has Anyone Done This Type Of Conversion ?
Are They Compatible?
IS OMC COBRA BETTER THAN THE ALPHA?
RIGHT NOW I HAVE A 7.4 MERCRUSER W/ALPHA DRIVE
All Replies Greatly Appreciated

Re: alpha to OMC???
Just my 02, but I would move to a bravo drive set-up. OMC is no more, and its only going to get harder to get parts and have repairs done. My buddy has been looking for a King Cobra drive with no luck, there just becoming obsolete. Stay with Mercruiser!!!

Re: alpha to OMC???
the bravo conversion is easy to do. You can sell your alpha setup on ebay and it wil almost pay for a normal bravo setup.
that what i di dwhen i went from alpha to bravo

To answer your question....
Transom assys are different. OMC parts are not hard to find if you own one or two. Cobra is similar to an Alpha in theory, but uses many larger components.
You would have to change much more than the drive. OMC uses an electronic shift assist, which is only compatable with a couple of electronic ignitions. You would have to run new shift cables too. There's a split cable with an intake mounted trunion on a bracket.
They have a huge oil res which helps keep them cool. They also have a cool pick up pump design. You could rebuild your pump while swimming.
Don't even need to split the drive like an Alpha.
While Bombardier is still making OMC parts, and you can get whatever you need, (some stuff cheaper than merc) for all that trouble... go with a Bravo.
Although Cobras and King Cobras will take a lot of horses.
If you were a lower horse application I would say Volvo.
Do a bravo. Chances are that your next buyer will have heard that OMC is unavailable. BS or not.

Re: alpha to OMC???
I just found a couple sites that have Cobras and King Cobras ready to ship.
Dubbert's outdrive in Port Clinton Ohio has all brands ready to ship too.
But after so many years of quirky shifting I would prefer Volvos.
I only have 260s.
