Hello I have a 78 cigarette 28 ss with 454 mpi motors and trs drives with the merctrans transmission One of the transmissions is inoperable. I am looking into changing over to the Borg warner style transmissions as I am told they handle the power better. I know I will need to change the dampener plate and the drive shaft on the trs drive. However I am wondering if all of the transom asemblies are the same. Does anyone see any problems with this or have any parts That I may need. Thanks for your advice. Brian

The borg warner 72 C is about 5" longer than the Merc trans if you have room to move the engine ahead that much .
The Transom assy is the same,Parts needed would be ,starter, bellhousing, transmission, drive plate, shift linkage ,yoke for input on drive and washers and springs to bolt the Borg Warner trans to the transom assy.I have all of the parts that You would need to do the conversion .P.M. me if you are interested .ps where are you located?

thanks for the fast response. I am in maine. There is no way that I have 5 inches to spare I had to disemble closed cooling and all belt driven accessories. and the use a shoe horn to get these things in there. so what do you know about the merc trans? do you have any of those parts availble? or perhaps a rebuilt tranny? thanks brian

Marc at Bam Marine can help you with upgrading your merc trans. It still may not be as strong as the B/W but it will be better.
