Hi All,
I'm sure this has been has asked before, but what are the max safe RPMs for a stock TRS outdrive?
I've been hearing 6k is fine.
What is the board opinion?
Thanks
Evan

The TRS and BW tranny are pretty bullet proof. I had them on a 60' X 16' housebout and we ran that thing hard and put it away wet--would do almost 40mph and pull water skiers.
I've also got them on my SR357 and except for electrolysis there's no problem if they are givin the minamal maintenace spec in the manual.
I've got the original Owners manual and Installation manual at home--I'll check them tonite for min/max data and post later.

Dregsz, I think a better question would be how much hp/tq can a TRS handle? 6000rpm with a smallblock and a light boat should last years.
6000rpm with 600hp in an 8000lb boat will last`considerably less time. 10hrs? Less?
The biggest motor Merc sold these behind was the 460 Cyclone, a 454 GM motor that (guessing) made 475ftlbs tq at 5200. Mild by today's standards.
I can tell you my TRS's didn't last for any amount of time after bumping up to 550hp@5400 rpm. Broke 4 of them last Spring, then went to Konrads. Much better now.![Cool](/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif)
What is your motor producing @6000? What size boat? What tranny?
Cheers,
Brian

The boat is a 76 Donzi X18, w bone stock TRS unit and tranny,
The motor at this point will be under 400 hp, and under 400 ft lbs.
The Cam selection *Can* spin up to 7k+, but peaks at 6k rpm, I'm planning to add prop pitch to keep it at or under 6k RPM, but I've heard some say 5500, others say 6k. but I may be swinging a 28P+ by that time.

...light boat, smallblock with light hp and tq, you should be fine.
One thing you might find at 6000rpm is the drive oil is getting slung around at a pretty good rate. It may end up blowing out the dip stick on the inner transom assy.
Also, at those rpm's, use a good drive oil, like the Merc HP synthetic stuff. Others may have different preferences. I like Royal Purple Max Gear 80-90w, and that's Konrad's recommendation for their drives.
