Your fingers or need be long nose pliers. Take water hose off inlet of engine oil cooler. Typically that’s where you will find the impellar pieces.

I start at the output side of the pump and start pulling hoses going through the systems flow direction. Back flush with water and or air as needed. I've found pieces in the thermostat housing so I pretty much remove all hoses.
