Steering wheel loose & clicking sound???
I have a 31ss Sonic with tilt factory steering and have about 4" of play in the steering wheel and get a single click sound when I turn the wheel either to the left or right.
Looking behind the dash, I can see the flat disc like mechanism that is connected to both the steering cable and shafted to the steering wheel. I'm able to move this back and forth about 30 degrees. I can see the disc shaft going into the steering wheel assemble is splined and I can see that the shaft moves freely from one spline to another, I'm guessing it's so worn it has that much room between the splines.
I've never had one of these things apart, where do I start?
Do I have to replace the entire assembly or just some parts to remove the slop and the single click noise?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Cable steering I'm figureing...right? How old is the boat? How many hours? Take a picture.....would be easier to see what you have. I also have play in my steering rack and pinion/cable assembly. Am looking to go to a full hydraulic single ram system in the future if $$$$$ allows

Re: Steering wheel loose & clicking sound???
I'll be able to get some pics a little later today.... 1994 31ss 454mags, standard cable steering. On the back side of the steering wheel, looks like black plastic splined female receiver for the metal shaft that comes off the disc piece which is attached to the cable. Seems to me the female black plastic section is worn... WHY PLASTIC??? And why not bolted or pins.... If it were off season, I'd rip it apart to understand it. Bing on season, trying to understand parts breakdown without dissambly and get parts ordered.

Click this link to some pics of what I'm describing.. in the pics you can see the metal shaft going into the black splines on the back of the steering wheel assembly. Again, to me it looks like the slop is where the metal shaft meets the black splined assembly.
Should I be able to take the entire black disk section and turn it 30 degrees by and without it moving the black splined section?
