Can I remove Port power steering pump and hoses???
My steering runs off the starboard motor power steering pump. The port motor still has the power steering pump hooked up and the hoses are just connected together and both are connected to oil cooler.
Any reason why they have to be connected to the oil cooler? Can I remove the port power steering pump and hoses?
Reason I'm asking is that I might need the parts for the starboard engine. I had a shop put a new coupler in a little while back and they screwed up one of my hoses on the starboard engine, hopefully they will stand good for it, I'll know tomorrow, but if not, I was thinking of taking off the parts from the port motor...
Thanks for your input!!!

Sure , take it off. There come from Merc with PS and they are not designated right or left. When the go in boats with twins , you wind up with "extra parts"

Beware when removing this pump! You will need to put something in its place to take up the room in the belt system. You will either have to install another pump in its place or install an idler pulley and new belt.
Sorry!

Why not keep it and make them both work? I like redundancy in my systems, especially steering. If you loose the motor with the pump, it's not fun limping back home with no PS.
Or worse, what if the belt fails on that motor while you're at speed? I've done this and it scared the chit outta me. Enough that I went and added redundant pumps after that incident.
All you would need is one "proportioning valve", and some hose fittings, seeing that you already have the rest of the hardware.
Good luck,
Brian
