No they shouldn't be counter rotating, you would have to replace the cam also then have to replace the drive for that motor to match the rotation. Might have problem with accessories also???

Let's clarify... what are you trying to achieve??? Does your port prop turn counter clockwise and the starboard clockwise? This is the norm. Also, norm is both engines running the same direction LH like fountain stated. So, props should be counter rotating, engines should not...... do both your props turn the same direction or something???

How do you change out the rotation of the gears?

I'm betting you have alpha drives.
If so, you need to get a left hand rotation
lower unit to achieve counter rotation.
( along with a l/h prop, and shift cable
location change at the quadrant)
