Merc has shipped their units with Alum anodes for a few years now.
A good rule of thumb is:
Fresh water - Magnesium
Brackish water - Aluminum
Salt water - Zinc
Alum will work in all water types, but not always the best. The best protection is above!

Yikes! Where would I ever find the magnesium variety...Could you imagine trying to explain that to the guy at the local marina...
