502mpi booster pump????
Need some info on the booster pump that puts the high pressure to the fuel rail. My engine is on the dyno right now and they can't get high pressure out of it. Nothing over 28lbs.They stuck their finger over it a second to see if they could get it to bump higher and no luck according to the pressure gauge on it.
Its the pump mounted in back of the engine on top.
I would like to know the cost of that monster or see if someone has a good deal on one somewhere.
Thanks,
Shawn

Shawn, what vintage efi do you have. Are you talking about the pump that is inside a vst or a boost pump that feeds a mechanical mounted to the sea pump or the high pressure pump on a cool fuel system? A pic would help.

Re: 502mpi booster pump????
Its a 96 502mpi. I'm pretty sure the guy mentioned the one inside the vst. The name didn't ring a bell until I saw it in the post.
My engine is a 502 Whipple charged. We went to a bigger cam and had Dustin do some work on the ECM. We went with a cam closer to a 600 lift. I heard its a big change from the stock cam.The mechanic wants to scrap the fuel system and go with one big pump and regulator. Then "T" into to both fuel systems, one being the stock engine one and the other being from Dustin. He then wants to plum a return line back to the tank. I'm not sure about all this but he siad it will work alot better.
He wants to go with Earmotive pump and regulator, but I heard some bad discussions about pumps and regulators.
Some more input from you guys would be helpful.
Thanks

Re: 502mpi booster pump????
The merc pump in the VST aint cheap...around 600 bucks. I've replaced both engines due to low pressure. I belive it should be around 45lbs at the rail.
If one goes south again I'll be looking at alternatives too. Let us know what you decide. I heard aeromotive not being the best setup as well.

Re: 502mpi booster pump????
What is the pressure you are feeding to the VST pump. I was under the impression that in order for the VST to make the 45lbs for the fuel rail, it needed to be fed at pressure from the primary fuel pump. If they are only using the VST to feed gas it won't make enogh pressure...
Of course I might be way off...

Without hesitation....scrap the fuel system. It is marginal in perfect operating condition for your application. My suggestion is a Weldon. Put it in and forget about it. Twice the $$$ of others, but cheap compared to rebuilding an engine or buying two of the others. Return to tank is HIGHLY recommended. I wouldn't have an Aeromotive shoved up....well you know where.

Re: 502mpi booster pump????
I told the mechanic this morning to scrap the old system. He's installing an electric pump with regulator and filter. Hopefully he'll make some pulls tomorrow after replumbing it with the new stuff. The total just for the fuel system upgrade is around 700. Not cheap but if it saves the engine so be it.
Thanks for the input!
