Looking for some input on removing the bearing carrier and retainer nut on a II TR. The history on the drive is unknown. When I got the boat, the transmission was in need of repair. The small block Ford has been rebuilt and the transmission is up to par now. I’m seriously thinking of tearing down the outdrive to make sure everything is O.K.
I’m afraid that the carrier nut will be difficult to remove. I can see that the retainer nut is a little bit out of round in a small area. I believe this was caused by some corrosion built up in the threads. A question is, will I open up a can of worms by removing this? If parts of the threads are damaged during removal, can they be repaired, or will the housing need to be replaced?
I was thinking of using a mild 10% solution of muriatic acid and water around the carrier nut to break up any calcium deposit that may impede removal of the nut. I know that the acid is corrosive as hell to aluminum, so maybe someone has a better idea.
Thanks for this great site on the TR/TRS info!
Thanks for any input.
Jim

Jeff,
Yes, I have the factory manual on the drive and transmission. It doesn't discuss thread repair if needed or removal if it's locked in by corrosion.
I have considered cutting out a section to relieve tension and limiting the possibility of wiping out threads as it unscrews. I would image this is a common problem with boats that are left in the saltwater for the season. Being the 2TR, everything is bigger and I have a feeling the repair tools may not be available if needed. I’ve never pulled out a bearing carrier, and I'm just trying to think ahead and figure out the pitfalls.

You can drill holes through the nut to weaken it and then break it with a hammer and punch.I have a friend that works on TR drives exclusivelyand has an extensive supply of parts and knowlege, He is located in Bellingham WA. P.M. me if you want his phone # .

Not sure if it's the same or not but the Mercury outboard manuals describe how to get a frozen in carrier nut out, they say:
"DO NOT drill into the gear housing retainer threads when using the following proceure for removing the retainer
If the retainer is corroded in place, drill 4 holes in the retainer and fracture the retainer with a chisel. Pry the remaining segments out."
They show drilling 2 holes about 3/4" apart and then the other 2 about equidistant around the nut, you can drill a pilot hole for centering and then go for a bigger bit to sever most of the nut, when I have done this I ussually just drill 3 holes, a couple near each other and the other one on the other side of the nut. I was real nervous the first time I did this but after a couple times it gets pretty easy.
You need a new nut with this procedure but you won't mess up the threads on the case doing it this way.
Good luck,
Caleb

drill/cutting and punching it out sounds like a good idea to me. I really doubt the thing will unscrew.
If by chance the threads are damaged in the housing, what can I do?
Can I only use a IITR gear housing on this outdrive?
Thanks, Jim
