is there a list/chart/ pdf or something somewhere that details the mechanical specifications of the various merc factory big block stuff... i.e bore/strocke/valve size, which ones have steel internals, cam specs, comp ratio , induction type etc etc ? all in one place ?

Dennis Moore's "Big Block Chevy Marine Performance" book has an incredible amount of info. on the merc. big block, spec.s etc. A basic must have IMO.

Do a search under Dennis Moore's book on this forum. I think it's out of print at this time but some oso members had several copies for sale. This is a must read book by a Mercruiser engineer, that is filled with vast knowledge.. Hp Books 1297.
Another good book is Big block Chevy hi performance Hp books 1216, also very interesting is Carroll Smiths nuts bolts, fasteners, and plumbing handbook. There is much more than just fasteners and plumbing in here. There is extensive knowledge and understanding of stresses, strain ,fatigue, vibration, loadpaths, etc. I recommend this to anyone who picks up a wrench. It even get's into locking compounds, thread inserts, rivets, metal structure, etc...
Sunnen also has a book that is full of engine knowledge. It basically is a College level textbook on engines and cyinder heads, It's currently out on loan to a friend.
I like Dennis Moores approach to understanding why they designed things the way they did and how much things were thought out. Good for you, Get all the books, And keep reading , BBB

Re: merc big block specifications
Have you tried Merc?
Merc stuff
Merc Racing stuff
It'llhave some of what you're looking for, at least on current motors.
