![Question](/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have Kiekaffer trim pumps for my trim tabs on my 31 sonic and the starboard is much slower than the port. Went to look at the pump and don't know the first thing about it. Is there a fluid reservoir? My thoughts are to purge the fluid and clean any screens....
Anyone have any insights on these things?? Suggestions??
Thanks!!

Without a picture, it's not clear to me which pump you have. Most Kiekhaefer pumps are all black with the lower half being a black sheet metal cannister/resevoir. You check the fluid level by removing the slotted, black plastic screw half way down the body of the pump which is actually a tiny dipstick. For the Kiekhaefer pumps on my #5's, you run the drive down and check the fluid level to the marks on the dipstick. The manual says tighten the screw and then back it off a turn and a half to vent the system. If you ran low on fluid, you'll have to run the tab up/down to purge the air. I don't have my manuals in front of me, but the part number on the pump would help if this info doesn't help you.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any manuals with the boat.... What would you recommend I do as a first step toward correcting the problem with it being very slow compared to my port pump? Is the reservoir accessible to empty and flush? ARe there screens or anything else that can be viewed and cleaned.
Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it!!!!

Got the pump out of the boat and disassembled... Thanks for the instructions GoodT!!! The fluid looked great, no real dirt to be seen. Cleaned the screens and put back together.. NOW.... if I try to fill through the dipstick, oil all over as it air bubble burps back up.... what is the correct way to fill this thing???
