Default Bravo shifting?

I have bravo 1s and the old school Morse controls on my magnum....... I'm curious as to how smoothly they should shift?

I want keep the Morse controls because they look right on the boat but I'd like to make the shifting more precise.......do I need new cables or does this setup feel sort of vague?

Thanks....
