This is just for storage but would like to perfect it and make higher for paint and working on it. Plus I really didn't want this just sitting on the garage floor where it could fall over!

I've really enjoyed this thread, getting some great ideas on stands. The photo shows what I came up with about 10 years ago to R&R an outdrive. Had to put it to use again, lately, to replace bellows. I just use a length of pipe to support the drive, via a J-bolt... the other end of the pipe is strapped under the handle on the hoist. Since I already had the engine hoist, my only cost on this adaptation was for two bolts.

(This is my first time, here, trying unsuccessfully, to get a photo to show in the window.... so, I had to post the url, above. Can somebody describe the process for posting photos? Thanks!)
Just select the IMG code one from photobucket, the one on the bottm

On your setup, if you take the J-bolt from the pipe and bend a loop in it on top. Then remove the chain and hook from the hoist and put the J-bolt back in where the chain was, works without the pipe. Used mine this way until I go the idea for my engine stand mod.

I, initially, considered using just the hoist without the pipe, but the height of the hoist, combined with the boat's rear deck overhang, necessitated using the pipe to access the recessed gimbal housing.

the northern tool one I have used - it really does not work 100 % as bottom clearance is an issue especially for boats 26 ft and down, It needs to be modify after the fact..

I do like it has a bunch of adjustability side to side and frot to back angles.

I have one off this same plan except the ends of the channel is welded shut. . It works pretty good, but you still need to wrestle with the drive to get it on. The ones with more adjustability would work better.
