Oil Cooler Mounting
Has anyone ever mounted an oil cooler directly to the oil pan? I've got a big Dooley pan and I'm thinking of the Revolution 3x18 oil cooler and I'd like to keep it on the engine somehow, so the engine comes in and out as one nice neat package. I've looked at the Dan Olsen block mounted one, but the price is twice as much...and I've got twins so everything is times 2...
I thought I'd take a piece of 1" phenolic and place it between the pan and the mounting clamps to keep the oil pan heat off the cooler...I'd just have to seal up the 4 mounting bolts going into the oil pan somehow.
Any ideas??

No way,I would be concerned the vibration and weight could cause the brackets attached to pan to put too much stress on it and lead to a crack or damage. A 3 by 18 oil cooler full of oil has to weigh 15 lbs at least, imagine the stress when your air born and land,it would yank on the pan,Smitty

I mounted mine across the back of the engine above the bellhousing. I used a couple of 1/8 in. thick cold rolled steel straps attached to the cyl heads and a couple of brackets from Eddie Marine.
