GOODT,

Not trying to start nothing here, but I was making the point that 15-20K an engine is way to much. File fitting the rings does not take over an hour. That was included in the $500 assembly. I missed an few things that both Rob & you brought out oil etc. OK throw another 1K at it. Still, its not 15K, which was the point this thread was leading someone to.

The price I said was reasonable, was the same you said you can do it for and do it right. Sounds like you charge a reasonable price so that you can make enough to keep the doors open and do a great job. We need more people like you and not the 15-20k vultures. With what I missed I will admit 7K is in line and I was a little too low.

I hope I did not offend any one I just hate to see people get taken to the cleaners when there are great repitable people like you & Mike11 who will do it right for a fair price.

I just had a complete rebuild done on a 500 efi, and it cost $7,500. That did include two pistons, re-working heads, 2 injectors, then the normal gaskets, roller rockers, and so on.

I am having Joe (GOODT) rebuilding one of my HP500EFI's right now and tuning up the other. He is a straight up, honest guy and gave me straight up excellent, FAIR price in writing--You can't ask for more than that

He was highly reccomended also.

I did my two 500 EFI's last year with 300 hours and actually could have ran them another season probably. The only issue I found was head gaskets. They were getting thin in a couple of spots.

A friend of mine just pulled his out of a 38 Scarab with 400 hours to do the same thing we did.

Bottom line is we replaced the heads with better flowing heads, all new top end including cam and valve train. New gaskets, new bearings, etc and I have less then $15K in both engines total!

Thanks for all the info everybody. Maybe top end is all that is needed. They all run great, but one of them seems to burn a little oil. The motors were probably run 50% idling, 49% cruise (3000-4000 rpm) and 1% wide open.

I have read other threads that say valve springs should be replaced (at least checked) at 200 hours. What kind of life are others getting with these motors?

I'm trying to sell the boat but people are afraid of the hours. I would want to have a deal before actually doing something with them.

I would suggest doing the bottom end as well. The GM rings are low tension and tend to burn oil. After 320 hours on mine, the rings crumbled when I removed them. The Speed Pro, Moly file fit with standard tension are a good fit.

Good Luck
