At what RPM should total timing kick in?
I have a 468 with a Procharger and my total timing doesn't kick in until 5200 RPM and then it's only 33 degrees.

555 cid alumn head motor 10 ;1 comp. 40 degrees locked in, 89 oct fuel motors are 9 years old with one rebuild after 400 + hours
most of the time when you see low total timing #s they have run them on the dyno, Dynos don't like a lot of timing,boats do !!

GM performance parts specs calls for 8 degree's at idle and 36 total degree's. For the ZZ502 motor.

9:5.1 compression , set at 35 degrees @ 4000 Rpms per Tommy @ Chief engines. Has the V-6 ignition so it is advanced right from the start. 22 to 23 degrees at an idle.
Although on the dyno the other night we made 4 more hp. set at 34 degrees at 4000 rpm. Dynoed on 93 octane.
Dyno Sheet is clearer on the ad in the link.

So what rpm do you carb guys run at idle in and out of gear "without" timing assistance such as the TBV has.
We are having a slight problem on a new 564ci motor dying when going into gear (at 850-900rpm). I have the Crane ignition installed on it and have the 14-34 curve in it. It does have a new 24-34 curve and am wondering if this will help it. I think I still need to richen up the idle mixture as well but was wondering on the idle timing. Cam is mild 238/248 114LSA.
I'm a spoiled laptop efi guy so any input here would be appreciated

I run 950 rpm in neutral, that's where it feels right. Sounds like you may be a little lean, back the mixture screw out a hair and see what it does. Also, I think running 36* total timing or more at idle may help the idle just a little bit.

what hp? 548
what grade fuel? 93 mostly... 89 if bought on river
what comp ratio? stock?

The motor was dynoed at 34* with 93 octane. I figured -2* would be "safe" incase I get some junk gas out on the river. Probably a few hp's but I like the word "safe".
