Boat is 89 Baja 235. Stock gauges.
I'm told it's an electrical (not mechanical) linkage.
At idle it reads 0.. as RPM's climb near WOT so does the gauge. When i'm near top end, the RPM gauge reads 2,000RPM's or so.
When backing off the gas, the gauge drops accordingly.
Any suggestions before i run out and buy a new gauge?

You could of course check the wiring before buying a new guage. You may have a short somewhere even if it is not likely since the ignition appears to work.

Check the setting on the gauge. On most brands of Electric Tachometer gauges there is a switch on the back. It will most likely read something like 1, 2, 3, 4.
1 = 4 Cyl
2 = 6 Cyl
3 = 8 Cyl
4 = Most Outboards
If the switch is set incorrectly the Tach will function but read incorrectly like you describe above.

Some of the older boat Tachs have a adjuster screw on the back. All you have to do is use the screw to adjust the needle while the boat is at idle. Use your timing light to get the accurate RPM and adjust screw until tach matches timing light reading. Let us know what you find.

Well, you have to start your DIY some where.
Personally, I'm more disturbed by his name though.

Im not trying to be mean or bash him.....
but too much info to some people can be a dangerous thing...
because they will try and fix it with not mech ability's at all, Im always more then happy and enjoy helping people here but when someone demonstrates absolutely no mech ability I always recommends they take it to a reliable shop in there area for that reason......
for people WITH mech back round / ability, alot of times it hard to see some people just can visualize a mech problem in there head
just like I have a hard time figuring out how this stupid computer works....
but give me a 525 with smart craft and I have no problem figuring out a problem
My brother has a doctorate in computer engineering (yes hes dr computer) he designs them....I start talking about intake, compression, power, exhaust ( the 4 strokes ) hes lost just as Im lost when he starts talking about pc boards ect
Im not trying to bash him just help him
