I was wondering - those that have Merc 575SCs's.
When you uncover your boat, does it have a smell like gas?
Not like STRONG gas fumes, but a general gas smell?
No, my tank is not leaking, nor is anything else leaking, all vents hooked up and tight.
When I uncover the boat (cover is made of Triton and does not breath as well as Sunbrella) there is a definate fuel smell. I was thinking it has that smell due to the throttle bodies?? When the motors were out for rebuild, I don't remember having that smell.
The boat has had this smell since the first day I bought it.
Any thoughts?

Mine does also. Trip 575's my cover breathes but when I open the hatch I get the gas odor. I'm not worried about it.

Bill,
I don't have 575's, but I can get a bit of a gas smell in mine too with 502 Mag EFI's. When I sleep on the boat or when is is stored on the rack I fold the cover under itself on the sides so it doesn't cover the bilge vents and then I have no smell. I don't think there is any problem, just when you seal up the boat that well, the fumes from gas in the plenum come out and have now where to go if the vents are covered. I'll bet if the boat was left uncovered for a few hours after last running it, the smell would be less noticeable.

Yes, Mine always smells like fuel. Wife always asks if somethings leaking. I don't have an answer. What I do know is the factory headgaskets are junk. Mine blew the headgaskets between 3 cylinders 2 weeks ago at 180 hrs. When the heads were pulled every cylinder showed signs of burning through. So quit worring about the smell and worry about your head gaskets.
