5.0 LX Merc engine noise
I have a 89 maxum with a merc 5.0 LX. When idling you can hear a noise from the flywheel area that sounds like a bolt came out of the flywheel and is bouncing around in there. It's an erratic noise and only at idle or very slow speed. It's definately NOT a lifter or rocker. It's specifically from the flywheel area. Could that be the gimble bearing? or could it be what I previously suspected. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Thx Guys.

Try taking a screwdriver or a rod of some kind and touch it to your ''Y'' pipe by the rubber coupler and put the other end by your ear.I had a friend the had the flippers make a tapping noise that sounded like a lifter.

I'll give that a try but it's intermittent. Not like a lifter. Doesn't sound like a lifter either. Sounds just like a bolt fell out of the flywheel and is bouncing around in there. I even took the port side of the flywheel cover off and the starter and used a flexible magnet as well as a 3 prong grabber to no avail. Pulled nothing out.
