Default 496 Oil Filter

I have a standard 35-802885T on it now. Can I run the Merc racing 35-16595T1. It looks like it carries more capacity, but can I run it and is it a better filter?

I thought I remember in one of the oil related threads a while back the shorty merc. filter is actually better than the taller racing filter... Hydro would remember.
