arcticfriends - that's what's nice about a BBC, even standard fair 454. An 8:1 flat top motor with stock oval port open chambers, medium hyd cam, decent intake, carb, headers will run 12.40's with 3.73's and tight converter in 3580lb car. The above was an $800 motor, including back yard refresh, and not counting for already owned carb/intake.
Engine torque X converter multiplication x trans ratio x rear gear ratio acct for tire diameter = torque to ground
(please don't uise above as actual equation - it's for your mind to see what's involved)
less engine torque needs more gear

I say mid 13's with street tires. The key is going to be getting it to hook up. Lower gears and good slicks would get it into the low 12's IMHO.

Mine did 12.00's on motor at 4040lbs 355ci with 60's on the front
Been there I figure you ll be in the low 13's ,depends on the rest of the car?lot of variables

I'm guessing mid 13's
How tall of a rear tire are you going to use ? If you put a 28" tall slick I don't think you are going to have enough gear, you'll be shifting into 3rd just as your hitting the traps.

not sure what size tire. I want it streetable, but as fast as i can and still drive it around on saturday nights.
I guess i did wrong on the gears. I did a poll here and everyone said 3.55's as a daily driver, 3.73 for more aggresive. I went with the 3.73s. It has a 3 speed th-350 in it, and it seems to wrap up real fast. i dont see it doing 100 without redlining with 4.56's.

I guess "streetable" is in the eye of the beholder.
A friend just got his street car running ... 69 Z28 with a 13:1 CR 540, I think the cam has something like .800" lift and 290/300 something duration. He hasn't had it to the track but he figures 9:30's or 40's , with the old 468 it was running low 10's. He's been cruising it around , not too much fun going around corners with a spool and slicks though.
When I had my Mustang back in the 90's it was just a mild 302 with a ton of spray. On the motor the car went 12.40's with a 4:10 and a 28 " tall slick. If it wasn't for the nitrious I would have had 4:56's cause the 4:10 just wasn't enough. I know that car would have dipped into the 11's if I changed the gear. It did go 10's on the spray though. That car for the 4 years I drove it NEVER had anything but slicks and frontrunners on it. It had a proshifted ( VERY hard to street drive) T5 but It had OD in it so I could still drive it on the freeway.
If I had your car I'd run a tall tire and the 4:56's. Although your 3:73's would work great with about 250hp worth of the giggle gas !!
Just messing with the some math , theoretically your car should run low 12s with a trap speed of 110. So i took the 110 and guessed that you would spin the motor 6000rpm and used 1:1 final trans ratio with a 28" tall tire the math showed you needed a 4.54 gr.

Re: poll, how fast will my chevelle be with the new power?
I would say mid to low 13s with that gearing and good street tires or drag radials.
If the trans is a TH-350 it'll be alittle quicker than a TH-400 because the 400 has heavier internals and uses up like 15- 20hp more than a 350, from what I've seen and read. Ditto for a 10-bolt vs. 12-bolt, albeit less of a difference.
Torque Convertor selection is critical - kinda like prop selection on a boat.
With that drivetrain you'll probably only see 300-325 hp max at the wheels so you can be guided by comparing that to Smitty's GTO since the suspension and weight is similar to a Chevelle.

Beg your pardon buddy but there's not a chance of this happening anytime soon. The LS6 was able to break the 13 barrier and that was an 11:1, square port, 400 turbo trans with 4.10 rear end gear.
The setup you just said here might be good for mid 14 at best.

you have to remember back in the dark ages that the LS6 chevelle was set up like crap for drag racing w/the worse tires man has ever seen, and people were stupid enough to think things like a "rock crusher" 4 spd was a strong transmission.
we have a budget minded, 68 chevelle street car that was built for a blower with oval port headed 454 bored 0.060 over, 8.5 to 1, mild hyd cam, 830 double pumper, 3500 stall, 4.10 gears.
car ran 12.38 @ 111 on the motor only, and 10.68 @ 128 with an old PB600 Procharger.
my old daily driver beater that i picked on the local kids on saturaday nights when i didn't want to bring the fast car out was an '80 monte, w/a bone stock never freshened 72 truck 402 long block, 90,0000 mile, 8.5 to 1 motor with a summit cam #SUM-1303, victor O intake, 800 DP holley, 2500 stall, 4.10 gears.
on 26 - 10.5 E/T slicks it went 12.90 @ 106. even 3 years later when the poor old thing was loosing it's stock gm rings it ran 13.40 - .50s all day at the local bracket races.
AND that thing weighed 3550lbs w/out a driver.
BAJARUNNER- sorry to jack your tread, your car sounds nice but it is heavy, i'm thinking low 13's but with your gears it's a perfect stet up for a shot of nitrous!
