First .... why would you think a 2000 motor is severely corroded ??? I would get someone on OSO ... Like JC ...(not to kiss up ) ...there are several others ... who everit is ... get references ... talk to their other customers ... if they dont want to get you in contact with them ...welll something is not right ...cross them off your list ...
If you buy a reman ...its a dice roll ... my theroy is its cheaper for the remanufactors to not have the quality control .... its cheaper for them to just replace the bad motors ...plus all the BS they put you through ... I have seen them warranty the motor and after you send it back they say nothing is wrong or not their fault... sometimes they will still give you another motor but its your dime on the change out ..
If you buy a new motor ...it still needs to go to a builder and gone thru to set all the clearances ..... ( as bobl said) .....

I WOULD TAKE A JC REBUILD OVER A MERC ANY DAY OF THE WEEK HE'S A PRO WILL DO A BETTER JOB THAN A GREEN MERC 502. Like I said before my block is 12yrs old and its fine. At least talk to JC to see what he can do for you.

Go to mercruiser.com and get into parts express , input your serial # and bam there it is. It will give you a list of the dealers closest to the zip you give them. Shows list prices so call around once you have the part # and see if anyone is willing to discount them!

Re: New Longblocks, Rebuilt, Remanufactured???
Your right, I don't know that my blocks are rotten. I happen to know the previous owner and know that the engines were run in salt water, never flushed, overheated numerous times, and have sucked up a ton of sand, that to this day is still coming out of the blocks and sticking the thermostats. I don't know if I want to go through the trouble of pulling them apart just to find out they are no good. That why I thought if I could find a REPUTABLE long block, or rebuilt longblock, I would go that route and be done with it.

Tried that but only got list prices for new parts. I have not found price lists for Merc rebuilt longblocks.
