Default sea strainer...

I'm looking for a sea strainer...hoping for good function at a reasonable price.
I don't care what it looks like, so don't direct me to a $400 purple stainless steel unit!

Any recommendations?

THANKS!

As an old boat mechanic of many years and having seen a multitude of strainers the best is the good old style bronze ones with the pull out basket available for around $100. I am gun shy about plastic and leery of stainless, plastic gives up at the worst times and stainless must be included in the bonding system or have a provision for a zinc when used in salt water. Go to any antique boat show and you will find 100+ year old Groco's still doing a fine job, now that is reliability! I run a Groco on my stroker motor, it catches everything and can be cleaned in minutes.

Hey, Phil, thanks for the reply...it's Tony from Michigan!

The water pickup on my Volvo DPX is right on the bottom of the drive, and while draining and flushing my engine for the winter I noticed a lot of sand in the system. I'll probably pick up the standard Groco strainer and install it in the spring. Another option is to convert to a thru-transom water pickup, but that probably won't be necessary with the strainer.

Tony I am running the SA 1250S, I have found them to be the best for high flow and they will keep sand an muck out better then any other. You will like the ease of cleaning, mount it so the top is a few inches above the water line! Cleaning it should not turn into a Chinese Fire Drill!!
