Century I have a nice setup from my old motor, almost all the parts you need to make about 575 hp. includes Blower, intake, intercooler, carb, cam , lifters, valves, roller rockers, pushrods, and more.

Here is a link to the add. make an offer

The first thing that MUST be done is to find out how the water got in the cylinder. If it is from the boat wake, then I would suspect a bad internal flapper.

Merc had 454 Mags in Weber carbed and MPI's in '96. Carbed are Gen V and the MPI's are Gen VI. He has the carbed Gen V.

Some parts will be about the same cost with the roller. Others will add up fast. Here's where I get the $1000 more.

Flat Tappet cost (Summit prices)..................total=$301
Crane #134242 cam and lifters........$170
Crane #99839-16 valve springs.........$64
Crane #13993-1 timing chain set.......$67

Roller cam cost (Summit prices)..................total=$1341
Crane #168731 roller cam..............$436
Crane #13532-16 roller lifters.........$470
Crane #99896-16 valve springs.......$215
Crane #13992-1 timing chain set.....$90
Crane #13628-16 push rods............$130

That is correct. You cannot use the roller cam without changing pushrods and springs. I don't think the stock rockers have the clearence to use them either.

I would first figure out what is damaged on the engine. A Mag engine has pretty good internals already with a forged Crank, and pistons. I would upgrade your exhaust and get rid of the wet riser joint. Check your exhaust tips and see if your flappers are in tact. If you have the old rubber style upgrade them to one's with stainless flappers. Upgrade your to a roller cam if you can afford it. I have seen complete kits for $900 at CP performance (minus the rockers & studs $350). Flat tappet would be a lot cheeper. With all of the upgrades you would also need a new oil cooler $300. It adds up quick, and I don't know if it can be done since you will be paying for labor. This site is a good resource, do a lot of research before you start your project.
Good Luck we have all been there.

Wow,

thanks for all the responses. A lot of good info. When I get some more time in front of the computer, i'm gonna look into all the things you guys have mentioned. I've been out in CA for the last month for work, but finally come home on friday and can get to work on fixing the boat.

Bobby,

Pat is actually the exact guy I had in mind to do the work for me. I plan on giving him a call next week. Can you PM me his number? He gave it to me one day at battle creek, but I have a new cell now and was unable to transfer the numbers.

btw, your boat looked good at cambridge!

Gil exhaust does not have a "wet riser joint" water is transfered form the exhaust manifold to riser through a hose.

The stock magnum oil cooler is fine and will not need to be changed with a mild build up with either cam. If by chance you would SC it then upgrade. I never had any problems with mine. I put about 100 hrs on my top end refresh and the next owners put on about 150hrs. The bottom end had 650+ hrs when the engine was pulled for bigger power.
