I've used forklifts numerous times and as long as the lifting assembly doesn't put all the weight at the end of the forks they're safe.....
I too am looking for a gantry or something that I can assemble in my driveway to pull the engines etc. I'd have to measure but I figure I need at least 6-7 ft. of lift to pull the motor, plus the height of the motor to the top of the gantry/come along and about 9-10 ft. width...
There's a guy down the street that has one, I need to knock on his door and see where he got it. I've seen him lift boats with it and the steel beam is about 12-14 in. thick!

I use the same u-shape boat lift to pull my engines out. Not too expensive and I can lift the boat from the trailer quite easily, plus it is made with bolts so I can store it when I don't need it. To mount it I need someone else, 2 man is enough... pictures to come tonight...

Had it made to my spec to fit in my garage. a customer of mine I sell truck to did it. He has a welding shop. I think it was around 850-900$ canadian funs so a little less for you I would say...
