Can you run two oil coolers in series on a Gen 6 502?
I was thinking about the possibility of plumbing in a second cooler and a thermostat to the oiling system. The stock 2"x 13" unit is vertical and in the front of the motor. It seems that one could plumb in another to the port side of the motor (cool fuel removed) on a carburated Gen 6 motor provided the oil lines are large enough so pressure drop is minimal. I was thinking of adding another 2" x 13" unit with thermostat for 100hp modifications done to the motors. Anyone comment or tell me if they have ever added another unit in series or if it is feasible?

i run two i mine now and it is a plumbing nightmare.....i have pOTED A LOT OF OIL COOLER QUESTIONES..........and the me to get a cooler from teague marine or this place............

Guys, unless you are using free connectors the plumbing will win end up costing you more than a single large one. If you look at your connectors you will see they are the restriction in the system and can reduce your flow rate considerably. Do a search on the Mocal adapter and chek out the large cooler from Trick Marine.

If you have room the Mocal adapter with T-stat is the way to go.

I recently ordered the Mocal Sandwich T-stat adaptors and when they arrived, I found that the gasket/housing diameter are smaller than that of the motor. Sandwich O-ring diameter = 2 - 5/8", Block O-ring diameter = 3 - 3/8"
How do you get the mocal unit to work with the 502 Gen 6 block?

A friend of mine plumbed two oil filters on the transom of his boat, at the same time he put in an add on hydraulic steering system. First time out, the steering arm punctured one of the filters.

I have a used cooler with 3" x 12" core. It's never been on a damaged engine. Probably good for up to a 600 hp engine. I'll sell it for 100.00 plus shipping.

Smitty: Sorry, not trying to discredit you. I did appreciate the info you posted. Somehow the size of my stock equipment measures different than yours. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that stock pipe diameter for the 502 is not the issue.
Tables from ANSI for 3/8" diameter pipe:
@40psi = 12 SCFM Flow rate
@60psi = 18 SCFM Flow rate
Tables from ANSI for 7/16" diameter pipe:
@40psi = 17 SCFM Flow rate
@60psi = 25 SCFM Flow rate
From the tables above, there is plenty of flow even for 3/8".
To set the record straight, it is the core size of the cooler that seems to be the limiting factor for heat transfer on the stock equipment.
