My 500EFI has the wire being discussed on at least one intake bolt, haven't seen any elsewhere on the motor. Mine is a 2001 year model, and I believe the wire is a tamper seal, desiginating the motor was assembled by Mercury Racing.

Could it be someone needed to practice their safety wire technique?
Is the safety wire on the WP and harm balancer tied together? Like one long wire connecting all the bolts, twisted appropriately in between? That's standard A&P technique I think.
