I've always dealt w/Merc., but I found this engine. I have a 05' baja that I would like to get more out speed out of. I found this engine, and here is a description. My boat is set up w/Merc. right now. I'm wondering if it can be adapted as stated below, and the pros/cons of going w/the volvo instead of a merc? The used volvo is considerably cheaper than a used Merc. too.
Advertisement description:
2001 8.1 496/420 hp Volvo Penta.
One complete Volvo Penta 8.1 "Pilot" engine with 180 hours ( 100 hours were at less than 1000 RPM) To adapt to a Merc you just need to change the bell housing, coupler & mounts and it will connect to a 10 pin Merc plug. good condition! Ready to go
Thanks for any help/info. given.

It will adapt as stated in the ad. The volvo 496 is built on a GM platform just like Merc. so alot of the same parts apply. There really is no downside. I have Volvo 600s in my boat. No issues.

I bought a VP from the same source and installed in my boat coupled to a Merc Bravo one drive.

I did the swap from a merc 454 to a Volvo 496. Very happy and the impeller is 10 min change. Also the Volvo uses the MEFI4 ecm which is easily reprogramed. I have done some of the Raylar upgrades with the money I have saved from going with the Volvo.

I appreciate everyone's input. Muffman, I noticed the water pump impeller loc. also. Def. easier to change. It reminds me of a Merc. inboard setup. I'm def. leaning harder towards making something happen. It doesn't appear to have a closed cooling system. I wonder if it's as easy to drain the water out of it as w/the Merc., and if the elec. fuel pump is mounted on the engine or requires an inline or in tank pump? I already have a bravo coupling, bellhousing, the engine mounts, and adj. platform mounts. I take it that's all I need and my plug in the boat will plug up directly to the engine? I like the sound of it if that's the case.....sounds like a relatively easy task!

I can put you in touch with my source if you'd like.
Yes, I too like the VP accessory layout better than Merc's.

Most VPs do not come with closed cooling unless it is set up for an inboard.
If you are using the Merc adjustable mounts, they bolt right up. If you have an "off-shore/race" engine mount, there may be a problem clearing the oil pan.
Good Luck
