Default marine msd box or not?

hi everyone,i am upgrading my igntion system this winter and was told by a couple people not to use the red msd 6al box in a boat because the banging on the water breaks them apart inside, the blue marine box is made of something else inside,i doubt it but maybe.how many people use the red box?cant beat the rpm red line chips.

Default msd..

i have the red one in my car.. it doesn't appear to be waterproof. the chips plug in to the box where the blue marine box has a pigtail lead with waterproof connectors that you plug the rev chips into.. The msd boxes do make a big differance on blown motors. before msd s was fowling plugs all the time and now never.. go the marine box's..

Theres a tech article on page 121 in February Hotboat that recommends the red MSD box over the blue marine one due to functionality and due to the fact that the internal parts of the box are potted with moisture resistant compound. Pretty good article to read if you get the chance.

Also the marine boxes can't be repaired due to the entire unit sealed in the epoxy stuff ... A compromise is the "N" box (Nascar) ,, they are sealed with a Silicon type material that can be removed ....m

I read the same Hot Boat article, and thought it was pretty good too. The benefit of the 6AL is that the rev limiter can be changed with a chip, and doesn't need an external box. All of them are sealed in epoxy, so I don't think its a water/vibration issue. Plus, an MSD in a car is at least as likely if not more so to get moisture/water on it, as the engine compartment is open on the bottom, where its sealed on the boat.

I bought my 6AL in 1992 and it's still going strong. Being in a freshwater only enviroment surely helps. MSD will repair them for a nominal fee but they won't touch the gel filled marine boxes.

They redid my 6 year old 6AL for $75. Better than buying new. I have rust on the pickup wheel too. every spring with the dremel tool and a nylon brush and its good as new.
