JL makes a component 7.7" speaker and they are releasing a component style 7.7 with the tweeter mounted in the grill. Their stuff is as good as you are going to find in marine application.

Then you can add some cool billet covers for them too.

Here's some in a 25 Daytona, the tweeters have platinum bezels around them to match the carbon fiber inserts on the interior.

badkachina,
Is that boat or someones boat that you know? The reason I ask, is i have been thinking about putting a speaker in the same location as that boat. Right next to the throttle. My concern is that i'll end up with bloody knuckles every time it gets a little rough. What are your thoughts on that?

BTW, i agree JL is the way to go. I had JL in my truck about 10 years ago and they sounded and lasted way beyond all the other brands i've had.
that being said, i personally wouldn't spend the money for JL's for my application. The boat is so loud already, more mildly priced speakers get the job done to my desire.

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback now one more question, do you think the 8" or 7.7" speaker is enough of an upgrade from a 6.5" that I won't feel the need to get subwoofers? How would the 6.5 compare to the 8" or 7.7" of the same brand?

You will get better bass response from the 8" 2-way then the 6.5". Depending on how much bass you want, you may still need a subwoofer.

This may be apples to oranges but I've had a set of 8" JL Audio subs in my truck since 1993 (in two other vehicles prior) and they still sound great. Also bought a JL Audio amp about four years ago and love it.
