I have a SBC Volvo Penta and when got home from a day on the water the boat would not run after the key returned to run position when I tried to flush it. It would only run when starter is engaged. I just jumped +12V to coil to flush it last night . The VP use a mando alternator and there is a wire going from the + side of coil to the alternator. That is excite the alternator right, not vise versa. Just trying to start trouble shot in right area and think I can eliminate the alternator. True?

Check the purple wire if there is one coming off the alternator going to the coil. Also check the key switch, they do go bad.
If it has points instead of electronic Ign, it gets 12 volts while cranking and then runs of a lower voltage resistance wire. Most older pentas have a ballast resistor that is white if they have points. I have even seen a bad or loose connection to points in the distributor. BBB

I found it, I traced the voltage back from ignition switch and it was the safety kill lanyard. By-passed it and had voltage at the purple. I have to admit I don't wear it very often, but suppose I will replace it anyhow. (it is a 48 MPH bowrider set up for wake boarding, no like I do many poker runs. :-) )
