Default How to set timing

Hi,
Need some help, i shall set the timing on my
Volvo penta 5,0GL -99.

I have all the info from volvo about the timing setings.
8 degree at 600 rpm and 31 degree at 4000 rpm.
But to be able to use a timing light and set initial timing i must first shut off the electric spark advance.
How will i do that?? Can i conect a hoop some where to get into service mode??

The procedure from Merc is to bump the rpms up to 1200, then put it in service mode by shorting out pins A and B on the diagnostic plug. Then set base timing to 8 deg. Unplug the jumper and your done. I use half of a paper clip to short them.
You are going to want to verify that it's the same for Volvo, but the computer is the same so I would guess it is.

I dont have a diagnostic plug on this engine, its a carburetor with electric spark control, Volvo says i must use there timing test tool and plug it in the empty plug in the distrubuter, but they also said it work by shorting out two pins but they dident now which one.

Just run the rpm up to 4000, set the timing to 31*, and let the initial timing fall where it may.
