funky water temps???
Here's a good one I thought I'd share...
Last winter I freshened my motors in the old Top Gun (big thanks to Bob Madera, great cam choice!) Well last weekend was the shakedown run, it was running perfect, no problems but after a few miles up the lake, I noticed the port motor water temp climbing to 130. Stbd motor just off 100 deg. Now these are blower motors with no thermostats and always ran stone cold, maybe 110 or so.
Held it steady at 4000 for about 10 miles and it climbed to 150.. headed back home for a 15 mile run and it fluctuated from 130 to 150. I'm thinking of all possible senarios and swapped out the sea pump incase I cracked the housing when instaling the hoses...
Took her out the next morning and she ran right up to 150 and climbed to 170. I was pretty irritated and made a sharp starboard turn to head back home. While turning, I noticed the temp dropped sharply right down to 100, made a turn to port and temp climbed right back up, headed straight and temp climbed to 170 again... I then took a look at the strainers while running at 4000 and there was no flow...
Figuring I picked up a bag or some trash in the pick-up, I put the boat on the trailer. Nothing in the transom pick-up. Pulled the hoses from pick-up to strainer, nothing. I was sitting there scratching my junk and a buddy came along and said it could be the stainless speedometer pitot blade, I said I didn't think so but I did just install a new one... When I took a closer look the set screw that holds it in place had loosened up and it allowed it to move around some...
I then took of the speedo blade, put it back in the water and problem solved!!! Water temps fine. The strange part is the speedo blade was mounted on the stbd side of the V and it affected the flow of water to the port side of the pick-up.
I'm just glad we found it right away, sometimes these weird problems can drive you foolish!
