Default 454 mag--losing spark on 4 cylinders :(

92' 454 magnum. Have been wrestling a problem of not getting enough rpm's. I don't think it's a prop problem (23p mirage). Only hitting 4000 rpm's with a baja 270. So last weekend I changed all the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Took it out for a test run and it felt like it was the way it should be. I was able to hit 4800, maybe more, but there was big chop.

Anyway, on the trip BACK from the test run, it felt a little more sluggish as it was normally, but it became very rough so I figured not to push it.

Two days later, back in the water, 4000 WOT. RRGGHH!!.

Today, I used an automotive meter to test rpm's on each plug wire, and noticed that i had good rpm's on the starboard side, but very low if any rpm's on the port side. The meter would toggle between 0 and 100 rpm's. So I retested the starboard side to verify the meter and it was right at 700 rpm's idling, and correct right up to 3000.

I'm wondering what could cause this and how I might confirm it.

1. Bad head?
2. Bad cam?
3. Bad coil?
4. Something else I'm not thinking of?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill w.

I would replace the coil and check again. If it still happens, the ignition module may be on it's way out.

That is what I wanted to hear As long as it's not something that requires me to pull the engine I'll be thrilled. If I can fix this pig so it will hit 5000WOT she'll be a nice running boat. Thanks fellas!!!

Picking up the coil at napa on the way home. It's cheap. They don't list a control module for the distributor.

I'm not buying a little bitty cobalt like Jason. This will get fixed, then I will run him over....politely of course.

Well no godamn dice Whatever is causing my headache, it's intermittent and sometimes affects different cylinders it appears.

Anyone know what the ignition amplifier does? Or is that whats referred to as the distributor module?

Maybe I should try swapping distributors.

Any suggestions?
