Fixed! Blown Crowns advice was right on.
We cleaned out the white dust and corrosion from the distributor cap, changed plugs, and all runs perfectly fine. However, the motor still does not stop when ignition turned off. We identified the problem to be in the alternator. It charges fine and works well in all ways. Is there another way of fixing this without changing the alternator?
