I just rebuilt my NA 540 and was thinking about using a belt drive. My local engine shop advised me against it. They claimed that these belts dont like the throttling that we boat guys do. In my case, not to mention all those nice looking aluminum pulleys getting salt water on them. So, I went with a chain again.

I use Jesel Belt Drive systems on many offshore race teams and poker run boats. The belt will not stretch like a timing chain will. I have never seen a problem with them at all. As far as hours goes I have had customers go 200 hours on the belt. Keep it oil free and clean.
